About Resident Evil

Resident Evil is the genre-defining survival horror masterpiece that launched a global phenomenon, originally released for the PlayStation (PSX) in 1996. Often searched for as RE1 or by its Japanese title, BioHazard, the game traps S.T.A.R.S. members Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine in the trap-filled Spencer Mansion. The gameplay is defined by its "tank controls," limited inventory slots, and the iconic pre-rendered backgrounds that created an unprecedented sense of dread. While the PSX original is famous for its charmingly "cheesy" voice acting, the Sega Saturn port introduced exclusive features like the "Battle Game" mode and unique enemy variants like the golden "Tick." PC players frequently hunt for Resident Evil 1996 patches to run the classic "Sourcenext" version, which offers skipable door animations and higher-resolution character models compared to the original 32-bit hardware.

The legacy of the original "mansion incident" spans several generations. On the Nintendo GameCube (GCN), the title was completely rebuilt as the "REmake," featuring photorealistic visuals and the terrifying Crimson Head mechanic. This version became the basis for the Resident Evil HD Remaster on Nintendo Switch, which allows for portable play and a modern non-tank control scheme. For retro enthusiasts, the "lost" Game Boy Color (GBC) version—a nearly 98% complete port by HotGen—was recently preserved and leaked online in late 2025, finally making the "impossible" demake playable from start to finish. Whether you are using RE1 PS1 cheats for the infinite Rocket Launcher or tackling the "Real Survival" mode on your Switch, the original Resident Evil remains a masterclass in atmospheric design. With rumors swirling of a 30th-anniversary remake for 2026, the 1996 classic continues to be the foundation of the survival horror genre.
