About DreamWorks Over the Hedge
DreamWorks Over the Hedge is a 2006 action-adventure title published by Activision to accompany the animated film. Set one year after the events of the movie, the game follows RJ, Verne, Hammy, and Stella as they attempt to reclaim their stolen gadgets from the Verminator. The gameplay is a mix of brawler and platformer, where players navigate through suburban neighborhoods, avoiding traps like motion sensors and laser grids while battling mind-controlled animals. A core feature of the console experience is the seamless drop-in/drop-out local co-op, allowing two players to switch between the four main characters, each of whom possesses unique weapons—such as RJ’s golf clubs or Hammy’s plastic toy hammers—and special abilities like the "Energy Blast" or "Time Slow."
The game was developed by multiple studios, leading to distinct experiences across platforms. The PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube versions, developed by Edge of Reality, are largely identical and focus on 3D combat and puzzle-solving across 30 levels. The PC version, handled by Beenox, mirrors this console experience but offers higher resolution settings. Handheld versions are where the differences become stark: the Nintendo DS (NDS) version, developed by Vicarious Visions, is a completely separate stealth-action game that utilizes a dual-3D engine to show the environment from an over-the-shoulder perspective on the top screen and an overhead tactical view on the bottom. In contrast, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) version is a 2.5D isometric title that more closely follows the movie's plot rather than the game's sequel-style narrative. Whether you are using the DS microphone to whistle and distract guard dogs or clearing the "Suburban Nightmare" levels on your Xbox, Over the Hedge is noted for its high production values and faithful recreation of the film's humor.
