About One Piece: Grand Battle
One Piece: Grand Battle (known as Grand Battle! Rush! in Japan) is a 2005 3D arena fighter developed by Ganbarion. Serving as the third entry in the Grand Battle series, it was the first to receive a localized release in North America and Europe, arriving on the PlayStation 2 and GameCube. The game features 16 playable characters and 32 support characters, covering the narrative from the East Blue arc through the end of the Alabasta saga. Gameplay is characterized by fast-paced combat in interactive, item-filled environments where players can utilize the terrain and specialized support summons to gain an advantage. The "Grand Battle" mode serves as the primary campaign, offering various difficulty paths to unlock hidden characters and gallery items.
Technical distinctions between the two platforms are largely centered on performance and visual clarity. The GameCube version is frequently highlighted for its superior texture filtering and more consistent 60 frames-per-second performance, even when the screen is filled with support characters and environmental hazards. Additionally, the GameCube version offers slightly faster transition times between menus and matches. The PlayStation 2 version, while experiencing occasional frame rate dips during heavy action, benefited from a larger player base and remains the more common edition found in the wild. Both versions feature the option for 480p progressive scan in North American regions, ensuring the vibrant, cel-shaded art style remains crisp on compatible displays. Whether you are throwing barrels on the Baratie or triggering a Secret Attack in Alabasta, Grand Battle stands as a foundational title for the franchise's presence in the West.
