About Nickelodeon Barnyard
Nickelodeon Barnyard is a 2006 open-ended adventure and party game developed by Blue Tongue Entertainment (with Halfbrick handling the GBA version) and published by THQ. Based on the animated film, the game casts the player as a "new cow" on the farm who must balance a double life: acting like a normal animal when the Farmer is watching and engaging in wild antics when the humans are away. The core gameplay features a massive free-roaming farm environment where players complete missions to rise through the ranks to become the "Barnyard Champion." Activities are diverse, ranging from "Tease the Mailman" and bike racing to customizing the Night Barn into a thriving social hub with mocktails and localized minigames like darts and pool.
Platform differences define how players interact with the farm's secret world. The Wii version, released as a launch title, is a "Wii-make" of the GameCube original that incorporates motion controls for minigames—such as physically throwing darts or aiming the "Milk Squirt" mechanic by pointing the Wii Remote. The PlayStation 2, GameCube, and PC versions offer a more traditional control scheme and are largely identical in content, though the PS2 version features exclusive "Crossover" bonuses for players with save files from other Nicktoons titles. The Game Boy Advance version is a significant departure; while it attempts to retain the open-world feel and 3D exploration, it utilizes a specialized engine to render 3D environments on handheld hardware, resulting in a more restricted but technically ambitious experience for the platform. Whether you are avoiding the Farmer’s gaze on your Wii or upgrading your bike on the GBA, Barnyard remains one of the more robust and surprisingly deep licensed titles of its era.
