About New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis
New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis is a 2009 Wii port of the 2004 GameCube title, part of a series that updated GCN classics with motion-based gameplay. The core content—including the 18-character roster and Gimmick Courts—remains identical to the original, but the control scheme is entirely redesigned to utilize the Wii Remote. Players swing the controller to perform shots, with the game automatically handling character movement by default, though manual movement is available via the Nunchuk's analog stick. The type of shot (topspin, slice, or flat) is determined by the direction of the player's physical swing rather than button combinations.
On the Wii hardware, the game supports a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and 480p progressive scan, providing a visual upgrade over the original GameCube release. The Power Shot mechanic is mapped to the Wii Remote; Offensive and Defensive shots are triggered by specific gestures or button presses once the racket is fully charged. While the motion controls aim for accessibility, they remove the frame-perfect precision of the GameCube's button-based inputs, making the "Technical" playstyle harder to master. The Wii version maintains the 4-player local multiplayer and all "Special Games" but removes the GameCube controller support entirely. Whether you are swinging for a curve shot in Delfino Plaza or using the Nunchuk for manual positioning, this version focuses on physical engagement and widescreen presentation.
