About Need for Speed Carbon: Own the City
Need for Speed Carbon: Own the City is a 2006 handheld racing title that serves as a portable counterpart to the console versions of Carbon. Despite sharing the name, it features an entirely different storyline set in Coast City, following a racer seeking to reclaim his reputation after a major accident. The core gameplay revolves around building and managing a crew of wingmen who possess specific abilities: Blockers ram opponents, Drafters provide a speed boost via slipstreaming, and Assassins deploy spike strips to disable rival cars. Players must conquer various territories by winning circuit races, sprints, and elimination events to become the dominant crew in the city.
The technical execution differs vastly across the three handheld platforms. The PSP version is the most advanced, featuring a fully 3D open-world environment, licensed music, and graphics that closely mirror the PlayStation 2 experience. The Nintendo DS (NDS) version also offers a 3D open world and utilizes the bottom screen for a persistent GPS map and crew management, though it features a more stylized visual approach and simplified car models. In contrast, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) version is a 2.5D isometric racer developed by Pocketeers; it retains the crew mechanics and city districts but utilizes a fixed-camera perspective due to hardware limitations. While the PSP and DS versions support local wireless multiplayer for up to four players, the GBA version relies on the Link Cable for head-to-head racing. Whether you are exploring the streets of Coast City in full 3D on your PSP or mastering the isometric drifts of the GBA version, Own the City offers a specialized experience tailored for gaming on the go.
