About Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is a 2002 fighting game developed by Midway and released for the PlayStation 2 (PS2), Xbox, and GameCube (GCN), with two companion versions for the Game Boy Advance (GBA). As the first main entry produced specifically for the 128-bit era, it completely overhauls the series' combat mechanics by introducing three distinct fighting styles for every character: two hand-to-hand styles and one weapon-based style. Players can switch styles mid-combo to extend attacks. This entry also introduced the Krypt, a massive unlockable gallery where players spend "Koins" earned in battle to open "Koffins" containing hidden characters, concept art, and secondary costumes.
Technically, the Xbox version is the most visually advanced, supporting 480p resolution and featuring higher-resolution textures and smoother lighting. The GameCube version is highly regarded for its fast loading times and supports 480p as well, though the controller's layout required a unique mapping for the game's four-button attack system. The PS2 version was the most widely played and served as the baseline for the game's technical performance. On the handheld front, the GBA received two separate titles: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, which featured 2.5D digitized sprites and a limited roster, and Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, which expanded the roster with characters like Sektor and Noob Saibot while adding a four-player "Tag Team" mode via the Link Cable. Whether you are gambling Koins in the Krypt on your Xbox or mastering the Konquest mode on your GCN, Deadly Alliance marked a significant rebirth for the franchise.
