About Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is a 2004 action-adventure sequel developed by Retro Studios for the Nintendo GameCube (GCN / NGC). The game introduces a dual-world mechanic, forcing players to travel between Aether and its decaying mirror dimension, Dark Aether. Gameplay is defined by a survival-horror atmosphere, as the atmosphere of Dark Aether continuously drains Samus's health unless she stands within protective light crystals. This entry also introduces the Light and Dark Beams, which operate on a limited ammo system, and the "Echo Visor," which allows Samus to track sounds and interact with sonic-based machinery. This was the first Metroid title to include a local four-player competitive multiplayer mode.

On the GameCube hardware, the game pushed the console's limits with complex geometry and advanced particle effects used to differentiate the two dimensions. Like its predecessor, it utilized a lock-on tank control scheme. The Wii version, released in 2009 as part of the Metroid Prime Trilogy, transitioned the game to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk pointer controls. This update significantly impacted the difficulty; the precision of pointer-aiming made several of the game's infamously difficult boss fights, such as the Boost Ball Guardian and Spider Ball Guardian, more manageable. The Wii version also added 16:9 widescreen support and the Spring Ball ability for the Morph Ball. Whether you are managing your ammo counts on the GCN or using the pointer to navigate the Ing-infested hive on the Wii, Echoes is known for being the most challenging and atmospheric entry in the Prime series.
