About Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime is a landmark action-adventure title developed by Retro Studios and released for the Nintendo GameCube (GCN / NGC) in 2002, with an enhanced version released for the Wii in 2009. Moving the series into 3D for the first time, the game adopts a First-Person Adventure perspective that emphasizes exploration, scanning the environment for lore, and platforming over pure combat. Players control Samus Aran as she explores the planet Tallon IV, utilizing the Power Suit's modular upgrades—such as the Morph Ball, Space Jump Boots, and various elemental Beams—to bypass environmental gates and solve puzzles.
The GameCube version is noted for its "tank-style" control scheme, which uses a single analog stick for movement and the R-button for standing free-aim. It features high-end graphical effects for its time, including heat distortion, condensation on Samus's visor, and reflections of her face during bright flashes. The Wii version, released as part of the New Play Control! series in Japan and the Metroid Prime Trilogy internationally, overhauls the controls to support the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for precision pointer-aiming. This version introduces 16:9 widescreen support, the Spring Ball ability, and a Credits system to unlock concept art. However, some visual effects from the original GCN version, such as specific water rippling and certain beam charging animations, were altered or removed in the transition to the Wii's engine. Whether you are mastering the original lock-on combat on your GCN or using the pointer to target Ridley on your Wii, Metroid Prime remains a masterpiece of atmospheric design.
