About Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms is a action RPG developed by FromSoftware and released for the Nintendo GameCube (GCN / NGC) in 2002. Unlike traditional RPGs of the era, the game lacks a standard physical attack; instead, combat is entirely card-based. Players take the role of Princess Katia, who must use a deck of magical cards to summon creatures and cast spells to stop a mysterious black fog from consuming the Five Kingdoms. The gameplay is defined by deck management, where players must balance three card types: Weapon cards for direct strikes, Summons for independent attacks, and Independent cards that remain on the field to assist Katia.
On the GameCube hardware, the game utilizes the console's processing to handle multiple summoned creatures and destructible environmental elements simultaneously. It is noted for its high-speed card selection interface, which maps the four face buttons to the four active cards in Katia's hand. The GCN version includes a two-player Versus Mode where players can pit their custom decks against one another. The game also features a unique experience system where cards level up through use, eventually allowing Katia to "transform" them into more powerful versions or new creatures entirely. This entry stands out for its dark, atmospheric tone—a precursor to FromSoftware's later work—and its departure from turn-based mechanics. Whether you are hunting for rare Red Dragon cards or managing your limited deck during a boss fight, Lost Kingdoms offers a distinct tactical experience on the GCN hardware.
