About 40 Winks
40 Winks (also recognized as 40 Winks: Conquer Your Dreams) is a whimsical and imaginative 3D platformer that takes players on a journey through the surreal world of dreams. Developed by Eurocom and originally published by GT Interactive, the game was released for the Sony PlayStation (PSX/PS1) in 1999. While a Nintendo 64 (N64) version was fully completed and reviewed by magazines at the time, it was famously cancelled at the last minute due to publisher financial troubles, only to be officially resurrected and released on a physical N64 cartridge by Piko Interactive in 2019. The game also saw a modern release for Windows PC via Steam and GOG, utilizing an emulated version of the original code.
Across all versions, the gameplay follows the adventures of siblings Ruff and Tumble as they battle the wicked Nitekap, who has kidnapped the "Winks"—small creatures responsible for good dreams. The title is frequently noted for its creative transformation system, allowing the protagonists to turn into various personas such as a Ninja, a Robot, or a Monster to overcome specific environmental puzzles and enemies. The PlayStation version is celebrated for its colorful, dream-like art style and cinematic FMV sequences, while the 2019 N64 release is noted for its exclusive two-player co-op mode, a feature that was originally intended but left out of the PS1 retail disc. Despite the stiff controls and challenging camera typical of the era, the game remains a definitive example of the 90s "collect-a-thon" genre. Whether you are navigating the spooky halls of a haunted mansion or soaring through outer space, 40 Winks remains a definitive and nostalgic trip through the subconscious.
