About 3Xtreme
3Xtreme is the final high-energy installment in the 32-bit extreme sports racing trilogy, pushing the limits of arcade-style competition. Developed by 989 Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the game was released exclusively for the Sony PlayStation (PSX/PS1). This sequel departs from the digitized sprites of previous entries, transitioning to fully polygonal 3D character models and environments, featuring over 20 international tracks and a massive roster of athletes competing in skateboarding, mountain biking, and inline skating.
On the PSX, the gameplay retains the series' signature "combat racing" focus, where players must punch, kick, and shove opponents to maintain their lead while navigating complex courses filled with shortcuts and jumps. The PS1 version is frequently noted for its expanded "Season Mode," which allows players to earn points to upgrade their equipment’s speed, handling, and acceleration, adding a layer of RPG-like progression to the frantic racing. The game is celebrated for its deep trick system, rewarding players for linking complex aerial maneuvers with a specialized boost meter. While the visual shift to full 3D was a significant change for the franchise, it maintained the rebellious, alternative-rock-fueled atmosphere that defined the 90s extreme sports era. Whether you are grinding through a construction site or racing through the subways, 3Xtreme remains a definitive and aggressive conclusion to the iconic PlayStation series.
