The 1998 version of Asteroids took the fundamental "rotate and shoot" gameplay and added a tactical layer with multiple ship types—like the balanced Vulture, the tank-like Sentinel, and the agile Dart. Across PC, Mac, and PSX, the game featured a campaign through various sectors of space, each ending with a massive boss. The Nintendo 64 version, titled Asteroids Hyper 64, stood out with its exclusive 4-player multiplayer mode and significantly faster gameplay. Even the Game Boy Color version managed to shrink the experience down, retaining the core loop of blasting space rocks while dodging the ever-persistent UFOs.
